According to the Milton GA Newcomer’s Guide, Milton is the “Home of the Best Quality of Life in Georgia.” The City of Milton is a new entity, formed in 2006 (City of Milton website). The town shares a post office with the neighboring town of Alpharetta. Milton has it’s own newspaper, The Milton Herald. However, the town also shares a a local paper, The Patch, with the nearby town of Alpharetta.

History

Georgia State Representative Jan Jones introduced a bill in 2005 to create the City of Milton out of an unincorporated area of Fulton County. (Milton GA Newcomer’s Guide) The bill passed both the state Senate and House, and was put to a public vote in July of 2006. Over 85 percent of the residents voted to approve the referendum and, as a result, the City of Milton was formed. The town was officially incorporated on December 1, 2006.

The first election for city officials was held in November, 2006, when the town’s first mayor and city council were elected. The city government now employs approximately 120 workers which include 55 firefighters and 35 police officers. The City of Milton is bordered by the towns of Alpharetta and Roswell, and is considered a suburb of Atlanta.

Demographics

The population of the City of Milton was counted at 32,661 by the 2010 U.S. Census. A significant proportion of the population, approximately 31 percent of residents, is under 18 years of age. The town’s homeownership rate is about 75 percent and the median value of owner-occupied homes is $463,600. The median household income between 2007 and 2011 was $119,250.

The City of Milton is home to an educated population. Over 97 percent of the residents of Milton are high school graduates. The town covers about 39 square miles of land, and houses approximately 848 persons per square mile.

Schools

The children of Milton GA are served by the Fulton County School System. The Fulton County School district is the fourth largest school district in the State of Georgia, and the school system is the only non-contiguous school system in the U.S.

Attractions and Events

The City of Milton website offers residents and visitors listings of happenings and current events in the area. The site lists public events, such as the town’s Golden Games celebration and Patriot’s Day Proclamation event. The site even streams city government meetings to the public.

Because of the town’s close proximity to Atlanta, residents and visitors enjoy the suburban calm of the town while the hubbub of the city is just a short drive away. However, Milton does have its share of smaller attractions, such as a variety of parks and nature preserves. Milton is in the process of building the Milton Library, which will be a branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. The Milton branch library is expected to open in late 2014.
