History

Marietta Georgia has a long history of settlement, beginning with the Cherokee Indian tribe. The city’s earliest white settlers built homes nearby the Indian settlements. In the early 1800s, the Western and Atlantic Railroad was built through the town, causing population and business to boom. Decimating fires destroyed much of the city three different times in the 1850s, but the city rebuilt each time. The city played an important role in the Civil War and was invaded by and taken over by soldiers. The city is a sister city to Heredia, Costa Rica and Linz am Rhein, Germany.

In the 2010 Census, the population of Marietta was around 57,000. About 28 percent of the population were households with children. The median age of the population is 30 years.

Culture

Downtown Marietta hosts buildings of historical significance, including several that did not burn down during the historic fires. The weekly farmer’s market takes place here as do many public events. The railroad still has a strong presence in the city and has a public visitor’s center at the depot.
