THE
TYPICAL HOME’S DUCTS LEAK 25% TO 40%
All ducts are not created equal and they do leak. In fact
the Department of Energy has stated that the ducts in a typical
home leak 25% to 40%. A bad, inefficient air conditioner with
good ducts can be more efficient than a highly efficient air
conditioner with leaky ducts. Leaky ducts, especially on the
supply side can result in dirty unconditioned attic air to
be pulled into the home.
OUTSIDE AIR IS USUALLY CLEANER
THAN INSIDE AIR
All homes leak. In fact there are good leaks and bad leaks.
Fresh air is needed for good health. Leaks around windows are
good leaks because they provide clean fresh air to breath.
However, leaks from attics, crawl spaces, garages, etc are
dirty. They cause excessive dust and respiratory problems.
The goal is to eliminate the bad leaks as much as possible.
HOW DO WE IDENTIFY AND FIX THESE
PROBLEMS?
Neese/Jones has invested in a state of the art Infiltrometer.
Originally developed by the Department of Energy, it allows
us to slightly depressurize your house. Then we can accurately
measure both duct and house leakage. In fact, with a small
smoke puffer, we can show you exactly where the leaks occur
and what needs to be done to fix them. We can also show you
exactly how much duct leakage you have and its effect on heating
and cooling efficiency. We can seal your ducts to reduce leakage,
run the test again and show you exactly the improvement.
