Whole House Air
Cleaners
Whole house air cleaners are connected to
your air handler/furnace as seen in 4 above. They come in 2
basic types: Paper filter and electrostatic.
Paper Filter
The paper filter is a thick filter that the return air blows
through prior to reaching the Air Handler/Furnace. The filter
could be as little as 1 inch thick (This type only protects
your system from being damaged, and provides little effect
on air in the home) to several inches thick. (This type will
clean approximately 20% of the contaminants out of the air
that are larger than .3 microns. One thousand particles this
size can fit on the tip of a pencil)
Electrostatic Filter
This is a much more efficient filter. To operate, the HVAC
fan must be running. The system electronically charges particles
as they pass through the first stage of the air cleaner. The
second stage is charged oppositely so the charged particles
readily stick to the filter. Most electronic air filters can
get about 50% of the particles over .3 microns out of the air.
UV Germicidal Lamps
Kills bacteria fungi and molds that can grow on your air conditioning
coil.
